The Most Popular YouTube Videos and the Bloggers Who Embed Them

YouTube is, by far, the most popular online video service, but we actually know very little about how bloggers use the service to embed videos on their own sites. Sysomos , the Toronto-based social media analytics and monitoring firm, just took a closer look at how the blogosphere links to and embeds YouTube videos . Overall, the company analyzed over 2.5 million YouTube videos that were embedded in blog posts between July and December 2009. The most popular YouTube videos in the second half of 2009 were the JK Wedding Entrance Dance , the Evian Roller Babies , the Muppets’ version of ” Bohemian Rhapsody ,” a video of musicical stairs in Stockholm and ” United Breaks Guitars .” You can find our full list of top 10 YouTube videos of all time here. What YouTube Videos do Bloggers Embed? Bloggers mostly embed music videos (31%) and entertainment clips (15%). Sports (6%), animation (3.2%) and science videos (2.9%) rank at the bottom of the most often-embedded YouTube videos. Interestingly, the film (3.6%) and how-to (3.1%) categories also ranked very low in Sysomos’ index. We would have thought that how-to videos would have ranked higher, but while videos about how to make a BristleBot can be quite popular, they can’t quite rival the popularity of Miley Cyrus and the Muppets. Who is Embedding Them? The study also looked at the demographics of bloggers who embed these videos. In general, 20-to-35-year-old bloggers embed most of the videos (57%), followed by teenagers (20%) and bloggers over 35 (20%). While music videos are the most popular category across age groups, older bloggers tend to embed far more videos in the news and politics categories than younger bloggers. A few more interesting YouTube stats from the report: Videos about news and politics get the highest average number of comments (561), followed by sports (490) and entertainment clips (436). Sysomos did not find any clear correlation between how high users rated a video and how often they were viewed. The most popular videos actually had rather average ratings (2-3 stars). North American bloggers link to a lot more News and Politics videos with a specific interest in health care, global warming and U.S. political issues. 20-to-35 year old bloggers are most active in embedding and linking to videos within their posts with 57% of total videos coming from this demographic group. The average length of a YouTube video is 4 minutes and 12 seconds. The average number of views for the YouTube videos Sysomos analyzed in this report was 99,160. European bloggers embed even more music videos than the rest of the world. Click here to see the most popular music videos on YouTube . SocialTALK.com – Plan Your Social Media Strategy

The way that social media can make or break anybody’s fortune is no longer strange to most people, certainly not to the ones who are in charge of Marketing Departments within enterprises. Just the previous weekend filmmaker Kevin Smith was dumped from a Southwest Airlines owing to his weight, and he tweeted incessantly about the incident. He was in his right to do so, of course. YouTube Takes Filmmakers Straight to Video When Others Won’t

Just to put the numbers into perspective, with its recent earnings from entering the online movie rental business, YouTube couldn’t even afford one minimum-wage, full-time employee. But it’s not a bad start, nonetheless, and the best news may be for the filmmakers themselves. When YouTube announced the move two weeks ago, we mused over whether or not people would be willing to pay for content, as is always the question. For a relatively quick, quiet test campaign, we would venture that YouTube certainly outpaced Newsday, with its 35 online subscribers . Sponsor …A Whpoping $10,709.16 The initial test, which ran for a brief 10 days, raked in $10,709.16 according to the New York Times’ Bits Blog. It featured five independent films pulled from the ranks of Sundance Film Festival, which received 2,684 views at $3.99 a piece. The 10-day test run was just the beginning, YouTube said on its blog , as the company will start to offer videos for rent “across different industries, including health and education … in the weeks ahead.” According to the company’s original announcement, content partners “can decide the price of their videos and the rental duration; they can decide when and where their content is available; and they can keep 100% of their rights.” This led us, of course, to wonder how much of a cut YouTube takes from the deal? While $10,000 is chump change for a company like Google-owned YouTube, that, or even one-fifth, is anything but for the independent filmmaker – especially for a distribution deal that retains all of your rights and decision-making abilities. YouTube Gets Into the Distribution Business We spoke with Chris Dale, a spokesman for YouTube, and he told us that he couldn’t confirm the exact details of the revenue split, but would say that the content provided kept anywhere from 51% of the revenue to more than that. To quote him directly, he said that “the majority of the revenue share goes to the content partner.” While that may make it sound potentially less appealing, he did point out that this is an opportunity for distribution, on the filmmakers terms – something most filmmakers are unlikely to run across during an entire career. “In 2009, out of 9,000 films sent to Sundance, only 53 got distribution deals,” Dale said. “That tops out at only a .6% success rate. Given that, it’s important for filmmakers to have other options at their fingertips.” We tend to agree. He said that the filmmaker can decide on the pricing, ranging anywhere from 99 cents to around $20, but again wouldn’t confirm anything further on the split. The deal gives filmmakers a reputable locale to offer their product and a potential for income as well as exposure. We think this could provide an interesting outlet for smaller filmmakers who can’t afford the expenses of DVD distribution deals. It also puts YouTube in a good spot, both providing these filmmakers with an outlet, as they’ve always done, while providing them a source of income. Discuss
