ELM & Willow House, An Inside Out Design from Architects Eat

The residence in the images below is a restoration of a Edwardian building in Australia developed by Architects Eat . The project team stated that their intention was “to create an Inside is outside is inside environment, where inside and outside spaces were interchangeable elements”. The construction took 18 months to finish, but is was worth the wait. The property also features a beautiful courtyard enclosed by the “U”-shaped building. We really like the natural feel of this place as well as its amazing location. Surprisingly enough, a part of the house was suspended not to damage in any way the roots of the near-by trees. The architects not only redesigned an existing home, but also added an extension. The interior also applies to the “outside is inside” rule, featuring materials and elements that are not usually found indoors. -via MOOD

Imposing Residence From Shun Hirayama Architecture : “Les Aventuriers”

“ Les Aventuriers ” comes from Shun Hirayama Architecture and is an imposing hillside residence located in Kanagawa Prefecture, an area with beautiful surroundings. The owners wanted a peaceful home that would be integrated in a natural environment. However, when it came to design and architecture, the land was not as peaceful. The house is built on a slope which means you will find angled walls and various ceiling heights. We really liked a concept put together by the developers of the project, as it brings an unique interpretation of the overall design. And here it is: “We produced a path that possesses comfortable straight eyesight, analogous to walking between trees. The path connects the inside and the outside, and again backs to the inside without a dead-end.” We hope you will like the “tree-house feel” of this place and we are looking forward to your comments.-via Design Boom

Architecture for Humanity : Donate For Reconstructing Chile

Not too long ago, we had a post here on Freshome about the earthquake in Chile with a few tips on how to design safe homes, that would resist minor seismic activities. In this post we would like emphasize some efforts that are being made in order to help the people of this community. Architecture for Humanity is a non-profit organization which plans on helping Chile reconstructing its buildings, after the devastating earthquake The organization was founded in 1999 and is currently collaborating with more than 40000 designers and architects who are “willing to lend time and expertise to help those who would not otherwise be able to afford their services”. This is the call for action message we found on their site:. “ By making a donation today you are supporting a grassroots network of architects, designers and building professionals to lend their talents and expertise in communities where there services are most needed and can least be afforded. You know design matters. Help us use the power of design to build a more sustainable future in communities around the world. “ We salute the initiative of Architecture for Humanity and we are giving you a chance to help out as well, by donating in order to help rebuild the constructions in Chile.

Cloud Computing Security: What The Big Guns Have In Store

The RSA Conference is the event for news to spill over with talk about cloud computing security. Let’s take a look at some of the announcements from the major players in the market, including Intel, Novell and Cisco. Sponsor Intel, RSA, VMware and the Trusted Server According to Dark Reading , the companies demonstrated a proof-of-concept for “building security into the cloud computing infrastructure.” The companies are playing on the white listing concept, which has gained wider acceptance in the security world. The idea being that if a server is trusted or white listed then it will be far less vulnerable to malware attacks: “At the heart of the PoC is a hardware “root of trust,” which uses Intel’s Trusted Execution Technology (TXT), which authenticates each step in the boot process of a system, verifying the hardware configuration, initializing the BIOS, and launching the hypervisor. It basically ensures physical and virtual environments aren’t tampered via malware or other malicious activity. Intel’s upcoming “Westmere” processor, which will be announced in two weeks, will support this capability, says Kirk Skaugen, vice president of the architecture group and general manager of the data center group at Intel.” Novell and the Cloud Security Alliance Novell is teaming up with the Cloud Security Alliance to push standards for cloud computing. The effort is called the “Trusted Cloud Intiiative.” According to Information Week , Novel will develop standards for cloud security, compliance, identity management and other related issues. Cloud computing is essentially a world with no standards whatsoever. Everyone has different meanings for the fundamental aspects that are a part of cloud computing. That leaves the customer with little way to fully understand what they are committing to with a cloud vendor. In its second year, The Cloud Security Alliance consists of technology companies seeking to develop use cases about the processes and practices around cloud computing security. Cisco: Developing Mobile Phone Security Cisco is developing an “always on” security system for mobile devices. According to Computerworld , the service would give enterprise managers the ability to control cloud-based applications on an employee’s mobile device. ComputerWorld: The service…”would allow a business to establish an always-on VPN connection that would “automatically log you in” and “maintain session state.”This new VPN client on the mobile smartphone and other types of computers would be the means to also establish policy controls to set restrictions on Web browsing, prevent unauthorized transmissions of sensitive data through data-loss prevention filtering, and provide automated access to cloud-based applications, as well as a way to de-provision use of applications, if needed.” Discuss

Kowalewski Residence, A Rigid Place to Live In Or A Cool Modern House?

Located in Atlantic Beach, New York, this impressive display of architecture comes from Belmont Freeman Architects and is a symbol of modern design. In a community of 1920’s and 30’s homes, this project comes to break the pattern and impose contemporaneity. We are not fond of this idea, however the building team considers that the the Kowalewski residence remains “respectful of the scale and architectural traditions of the community”. Overall, we think the house has some pretty cool architecture features, such as the irregular shape or the vertical window section which brakes monotony and seems to split the building in two unequal parts. The round window is also of great aesthetic effect. Still, in our opinion, homes should lose the rigid feel and stick to a design that inspires a homey atmosphere. What do you think about this idea?-via Arch Daily
